NSW: Prosecutors want to join Newman accused trials
Prosecutors will try to combine the trials of a man accused of shooting New South Wales MP
JOHN NEWMAN with another man whose trial over the murder was aborted.
Crown prosecutor MARK TEDESCHI, QC, (Pron: Ted-ES-ki) told Central Local Court the Director
of Public Prosecutions would seek to join the trial of DUY THAI DINH with PHOUNG CANH NGO
(PRON: Foong Can No), already before the NSW Supreme Court.
It's alleged DINH, aged 27, shot Mr NEWMAN outside his Cabramatta home in Sydney's west on
September 5, 1994.
Mr TEDESCHI said the DPP had yet to decide whether DINH'S matter should proceed in the
magistrates court or be accelerated to the higher court.
Magistrate ALLAN MOORE adjourned the matter to August 25 and formally refused DINH bail.
The trial of NGO, aged 39, who is also charged with Mr NEWMAN'S murder, was aborted two
weeks ago.
His co-accused, TUAN VAN TRAN, aged 29, received an indemnity from prosecution after making
a statement to police.
Another man, TU QUANG DAO, has also been charged with the murder but will face a separate
trial.
