Vic: Low-paid workers get pay-rise

More than half a million low-paid Victorian workers will receive a pay rise from today.

The Australian Industrial Relations Commission this morning granted the full flow-on
of May's Federal Living Wage Decision to Victoria's low-paid.

Around 560,000 workers will receive between $13 and $17 extra a week.

The traditional annual living wage pay rise for Victoria dates from September 10.

This year Trades Hall called on the AIRC to backdate the payrise to June 1, when the
federal award increase was introduced.

Unions argued that Victoria was in a strong economic condition while a state government
taskforce recently found about 560,000 workers, 33 per cent of the state's labour force,
were doing it hard.

The commission compromised with a ruling that the pay rise take effect immediately.
